Visit Historical Museums in Baton Rouge, LA

Considered one of the top outdoor museums in the states, the historical LSU Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge features a number of fascinating exhibits that take you back to 19th century Louisiana. Experience the rural lifestyles with the largest collection of artifacts from the periods. Take field trips through the grounds and see authentically-recreated cabins, jail, post office, blacksmith's shops, sugar mills, and other historic architecture of the 40-acre, Burden Plantation. The museum and enchanted Windrush Gardens are available to host weddings and your special events.

  • Can I take photos at the LSU Rural Life Museum?

    Yes, you can take photos and videos when walking around the museum for personal use only. These cannot be published online or used for commercial purposes. The facility also offers professional and amateur photography appointments. All photography sessions have can be purchased at the gift shop and is available for both the museum and the gardens.   • Are there tours at the LSU Rural Life Museum?

    Yes, the Rural Life Museum offers self-guided tours and you can use the maps to help you navigate the museum. Guided tours for groups of 10 adults or more are also available. If you’re interested in a guided group tour, you’ll need to make an appointment at least two weeks in advance. School tours are also available. For more information, call (225) 765-2437.
